plot questions (contains spoilers)
  • okay so Prometheus was an awesome movie, but there seemed to be some big
    plot holes, or at least things that didnt seem to have an explanation



    1) why was the engineer trying to kill humanity? his race created us and
    didn't seem to really have any knowledge of us so why the hostility?



    2) why did they have the relationship between the old dude and charlize
    theron? that seemed to have absolutely no relevance to the movie, just
    something they threw in and didn't go anywhere with



    3) not so much a question, but why have guy peirce play the old guy? why
    not just have... an old guy play and old guy, he wasn't even
    recognizable as an actor and his makeup looked like makeup

    1) I think it is misunderstanding because they arent speaking same language.  For example no one can understand this man after he is change and they burn him with the fire

    2) hello america it is sex it sells.  also charlize theron not young too

    3)  you want sean connery maybe goldeneye 2 prometheus?  i dont think so!
  • for 1 i can understand why he attacted them, but why go to their planet to destroy their race? seems a little extreme

    for 2 not sex, the father daughter thing... it didnt make any sense and they didnt develop it all. does it have an additional storyline in the alien universe that im not aware of or is it just random.

    ok.  I think you are talk about old dude captain.  old weyland not definitely is sex but normal father and girl fighting.  david the android says we all want our parents die.

    my father is died in a cave near Kiev.  My mother is thank God alive.

    I hate to be so blunt about it by you ask 'why'?

    Spend time at sea with a "mixed" crew ... the ships Master is attractive because he sets your work schedule.  The ships Engineers are attractive because they keep your toilets flushing and the heaters running in your cabin.

    Deck hands, cargo and mission specialists ... not that much influence.



    Thus human beings are now carrying out a large scale geophysical experiment of a kind that could not have happened in the past nor be reproduced in the future. Within a few centuries we are returning to the atmosphere and oceans the concentrated organic carbon stored in sedimentary rocks over hundreds of millions of years.

    wow. so much misunderstanding in here. 

    1. Vickers being Weyland's daughter was in there for 3 reasons really. 1) she looked like she might be an android for part of the movie, but then there is the reveal that she is really weyland's daughter and that Weyland created David as the male child. 2.) It is a further symbol of the creator/created relationship. 3) It is a hllmark of Lindelof writing to have daddy issues. 

    2. we do not know why exactly the Engineers wanted to kill humans after creating us. This is mostly fodder for the next movie. However, because of the carbon dating of the decapitated Engineer we now that whatever happened to them, happened 2000 years ago.  Also, from the glyphs found, it does not seem like they visited after the Common Era started - or after christ. the glyphs after CE no longer depict the engineers. 

    and, RS and Lindelof are pretty much on record that whatever the reason is, it has to do with Jesus possibly being an anegineer they sent down and we killed.  

    3.) guy pierce was cast because there are cut scenes form the movie where we watch him dream and he is young, so they needed an actor who could play young and old. by the time they cut the scene, it was too late. plus, they may use a younger Weyland in later movies.

    Answers to these questions can be found in various threads all over this forum.  Some of them can be open to some speculation, but to save you some time, I'll try to answer concisely from what I believe to be true about the film.

    1)  Some say this is meant to be open-ended and will be answered in a sequel.  Others, myself included, feel that it is implied through various subtext and clues that the Engineers decided to kill of humans on Earth because they had been "misbehaving" (as RS puts it).  Some will go even further to say (using various clues and subtexts) that Jesus was an emissary of the Engineers who was meant to calm things down so-to-speak, and that in killing him we essentially signed our own death warrant.  The evidence that this is the case is, again, elsewhere on this forum.

    2)  To say that this relationship is irrelevant is to say that the character of Vickers is irrelevant, which I don't think anyone would say.  The relationship between Vickers and Weyland is a metaphor for what happens between humans and the Greek gods.  While it was a Titan (Prometheus) that creates man in the myth, eventually, humans dare to challenge the gods at various points in mythology, and they can only do so by getting stolen fire from the gods.  Vickers' agenda on this mission is to see to it that her dad doesn't achieve his goal... immortality.  Her reason for this is clear... to achieve immortality is to upset the natural order of things ("A King has his reign...").  If Weyland never dies, than Vickers can never properly replace him.  This is also metaphorical with Weyland, human ambition, and the Engineers.  If the Engineers are the gods, then humans can never be the gods, unless we overthrow them.  Hence David's line "don't all children want their parents dead?".  

    3)  This has been answered elsewhere, but there were other scenes in the film that show Weyland in his younger form, but these were cut from the film.
    We got tactical smart missiles, phase-plasma pulse rifles, RPGs, we got sonic electronic ball breakers! We got nukes, we got knives, sharp sticks...
