I'm fairly certain there is extra footage showing 2 Engineers present at the waterfall. A piece of concept art supports this and also the leaked trailer report by Eduardo Guzman from November 2011 had something about "two cloaked people".

“Trailer starts with a clip of Ripley from Alien and the words “What if the beginning” and then we see the mouth of the Xenomorph “Wasnt the beginning” or something like that. Then theres this shot of like a giant waterfall on some planet I don’t know what the planet was and a ship traveling to it.

Then we see like two cloaked people talking to eachother near the waterfall or something and theres a voice over from who I’m guessing is Noomi Rapace and she says something like: “A woman once told me a story of how man was created” then we see this giant human like creature thing (which im guessing is the Space Jockey thing from Alien but I’m not sure) Voiceover: “First there was the sun” and we see this giant oval alien ship covering the sky. Voice over ” And the sun said I’m alone and I have noone to shinedown on so it created man” and another shot of the giant space jockey thing. and then theres like shots of the crew on the space ship traveling to that planet

    Fantastic.

The mural piece shows the engineers hand inside the creature's head!

Someone I know that worked in the art department told me a few things months ago - according to him the script started with 3 engineers - 2 of them walking away and leaving just one behind. From then onwards he described the opening sequence pretty much as it played out in the film.

Also: I notice in that french artbook text the word 'trilobite'  - this is what he referred to 'cuddles' as back then.

    These are great!
The ancient being giving the eitr cup to the engineer is cool, kinda wish he was in the movie too.
    Gotta get the book!

Well, this all confirms to me that there was much cut from the theatrical release.  That sucks, but I hope they salvage it all when the Bluray comes out.

Yeah, Darwin Shaw is supposed to be playing an Engineer, and is nowhere to be seen in the movie, he said on his Twitter to wait for the director's cut and FULL opening scene, so yeah, it was shot.

Ahh, I totally forgot about the 'Elder Engineer' credit that appeared on IMDB some time ago, I wonder if there is an alternate take of the opening scene.

EDIT: sorry, had the window open for a while, didn't mean to needlesly reiterate what was said.

Sweet. Maybe they cut some stuff to hold it back for the sequel, or maybe dvd/blueray sales.

2 Engineers present at the waterfal, potentially one giving the cup to the other, does present quite a few different scenarios possible in terms of significance and meaning of that opening scene.

Also, in case you missed it, Charlize talks about a certain scene with Idris Elba that was not included in the TR http://youtu.be/5OJQBLCRWJs?t=2m26s

Wow, how old is that Engineer? Looks ancient compared to the younger guy that drinks the potion in the film. Very interesting.
